Event Overview

Kanayama Minami Building Museum of Art will be hosting the Giant Robots of Japan Exhibition in Nagoya, which will feature a number of displays, exhibits and a range of exclusive merchandise available to purchase.

It has been 60 years since the 1963 TV anime “Tetsujin 28-go” was aired and mecha anime rose to popularity. In Japan, animations featuring “giant robots” have been produced ever since.

What is the appeal of these robots? The exhibition explores the characteristics of the designs and visual expressions of giant robots from the past and present, alongside the following specific exhibits:

Exhibition 1 – The “mechanisms” of giant robots

Exhibition 1 – The “mechanisms” of giant robots

This part of the exhibition will focus on the mechanisms and design process of giant robots, with sketches by designers on display.

Often, giant robots can transform, combine or be boarded by humans. The robots must not only be designed with anime in mind, but also sales of real life toys, so the designs must be practical for both purposes.

Exhibit 2 – Feel like a pilot! Experience the size of a giant robot!

Exhibit 2 – Feel like a pilot! Experience the size of a giant robot!

The second exhibit looks at how the size of robots in anime has changed over time.

In the 1980s, giant robots became smaller almost as if they were practical machinery, and at the same time, their depictions became more realistic. In recent times, robots have become larger and more fantastic, yet still grounded in reality.

The exhibit shows the scale of robots from anime in real-life size.

Exhibit 3 – The internal mechanisms of giant robots

Next, the exhibition will look at the internal mechanisms of giant robots. A meticulous level of design goes into these creations and the interior of robots is now the focus of many toys and model kits.

Exhibit 4 – A giant robot painting by Kazutaka Miyatake (Studio Nue)

Kazutaka Miyatake (Studio Nue) has created a huge painting with the theme of giant robots especially for this exhibition. Please enjoy the robot world depicted by Miyatake on the large screen that only a museum can offer!

In addition, the work of Studio Nue, the studio to which Miyatake belongs, will also be introduced in a special exhibition!
