Bunkyo Sakura Festival celebrates arrival of cherry blossoms in Tokyo

The 53rd Bunkyo Cherry Blossom Festival is marking the start of the cherry blossom season in Tokyo.
The festival is known as one of the “Five Great Flower Festivals of Bunkyo”.
The “Five Great Flower Festivals of Bunkyo” are a series of seasonal festivals that highlight the natural beauty of the Bunkyo area of Tokyo.
This year’s festival is being held from Saturday, March 22nd, to Sunday, April 6th, 2025.
The festival’s primary venue is the Harimazaka Sakura Tree Line, a well known cherry blossom viewing location within Bunkyo Ward, Tokyo.
The Harimazaka Sakura Tree Line is located between Koishikawa 4-chome and 5-chome and is characterized by a linear arrangement of approximately 120 Somei-Yoshino cherry trees.
Additionally, the location features less common cherry tree varieties, including the Ukon cherry tree, which is distinguished by its pale yellow-green, double-flowered blossoms.
The anticipated blooming period for the cherry blossoms is expected to begin around Friday, March 21st, with full bloom occurring around Friday, March 28th.
On Saturday, March 29th, and Sunday, March 30th, the Harimazaka Sakura Tree Line will be designated as a pedestrian-only zone.
During these two days, a variety of events will take place, including taiko drums, brass band performances and food stalls.
Throughout the festival period, lanterns will illuminate the Harimazaka area during the evening hours.
This year, supplemental lighting will be installed to illuminate the cherry blossoms themselves, extending the viewing experience into the night time. The lighting will be a simple white, designed to enhance the natural colors of the cherry blossoms.
