What to expect at Asakusa Tori-no-ichi Fair II 2024

One of the most iconic autumn festivals in Japan is Tori no Ichi or “The Festival of the Rooster“.

Instantly recognisable with it’s brightly decorated Kumade (decorative rakes) and other lucky charms, the festival is held over multiple days known as “rooster days”, with the days chosen according to the lunar calendar for their auspicious nature.

Depending on the year, there can be either 2 or 3 “rooster days” in November. In 2024, the festival will be held over 3 such days.

Kumade are sold by many vendors at the festival and are believed to bring good fortune and financial prosperity to the buyer.

Stall holders will bless the buyer with a clapping ritual each time a Kumade is purchased, signifying thanks and blessings and to add more luck to the charm.

The size and scale of Kumade vary from small, simple displays that cost a couple of thousand yen, up to huge elaborately decorated examples that cost millions of yen.

Tori no Ichi festivals have been held at Ōtori Shrine since the 1700’s, with the yearly tradition believed to bring prosperity, ward off evil and prepare for the coming new year.

The festival has a lively atmosphere with over 60 stalls selling traditional festival foods, Kumade and charms.
