What to expect at Akutai Matsuri Bad-Mouthing Festival
One of the most unusual festivals to be held in Japan, the Akutai Matsuri or bad-mouthing festival, is held at the foot of Mt. Atago at Atago Shrine and Iizuna Shrine.
Although the origins of this festival are unclear, it is believed that is was started as a festival to drive away evil spirits & epidemics or as a way for the feudal lord to air out the daily grievances and discontent of residents by swearing.
During the festival thirteen Tengu dressed in white robes make offerings to 16 shrines. Worshippers then compete to take hold of the offerings being made whilst shouting insults at each other.
It is said that for those who manage to take the offerings home it will bring them good health, safety for their family and bountiful harvests.
