Reaching Rishiri and Rebun Islands involves a scenic ferry journey from mainland Hokkaido:

  • Ferry: Wakkanai Ferry Terminal in northern Hokkaido serves as your gateway. It offers regular connections to both Rishiri (Rishirifuji Port) and Rebun (Kafuka Port). Ferry services are seasonal. They usually run from spring to late autumn, make sure to check in advance of your visit.
  • How to reach Wakkanai:
    • Train: JR Soya Main Line trains run to Wakkanai Station, close to the ferry terminal.
    • Bus: Highway buses offer direct routes from major cities like Sapporo to Wakkanai.
    • Airplane: Wakkanai Airport welcomes flights from across Hokkaido. From the airport, it’s a short journey to the ferry terminal.
  • Car: Hokkaido’s roads are excellent for exploring independently. Visitors from Honshu (Japan’s main island) can take a ferry across and then drive to Wakkanai.
