Miyajima

Miyajima Island, also known as Itsukushima, beckons travelers with a captivating blend of historical significance, natural beauty, and cultural immersion. Located just off the coast of Hiroshima, this island offers a unique experience within easy reach of the bustling city.

Iconic Floating Gate:

The island’s defining landmark is the Itsukushima Shrine, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This iconic shrine, seemingly floating on the water at high tide, is a stunning example of traditional Japanese architecture. Explore its majestic gateways (torii), red lacquered buildings, and serene gardens, and immerse yourself in the spiritual atmosphere.

Beyond the Shrine:

While the Itsukushima Shrine is the main attraction, Miyajima Island offers much more to discover. Hike Mount Misen, the island’s highest peak, for panoramic views of the surrounding landscape and the Seto Inland Sea. Explore the Momijidani Park, renowned for its vibrant autumn foliage, or stroll through the Daisho-in Temple, a hidden gem nestled in the mountainside, offering a peaceful retreat.

Encountering Wildlife:

Miyajima Island is inhabited by a population of Sika deer, considered messengers of the gods in Japanese culture. While these friendly creatures roam freely, it’s important to avoid feeding them and maintain a respectful distance. The island also boasts a rich marine ecosystem, making it a haven for birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts.

Culinary Delights:

Indulge in the local culinary scene, renowned for fresh seafood and regional specialties. Sample “momiji manjyu,” a sweet red bean paste bun shaped like a maple leaf, a popular souvenir from the island. Savor “anago meshi,” a dish featuring steamed eel served over rice, or savor the fresh catch of the day at one of the many waterfront restaurants.

A Glimpse into History:

The Miyajima Museum of History and Folklore delves into the island’s rich past, showcasing artifacts and exhibits that tell the story of its cultural significance and connection to the Shinto faith.

Beyond the Island:

Miyajima Island serves as a perfect base for exploring Hiroshima and the surrounding region. Day trips to Hiroshima offer immersion in the city’s history and vibrant culture, while nearby Miyajimaguchi offers charming shops and restaurants.

Whether seeking historical immersion, cultural experiences, or a serene escape in nature, Miyajima Island offers something for everyone. From the iconic floating gate to the lush mountains and friendly deer, this island promises an unforgettable journey through the heart of Japan.
