Sanko Inari Shrine Torii
About Sanko Inari Shrine

Located in Inuyama City, Sanko Inari Shrine is one of the more prominent landmarks of the area with a history dating back to the 16th century. Though the exact year of the shrine’s construction remains unknown it is estimated to be around 1586.

Originally known as “Sankojisan”, the shrine is dedicated to Inari, the Shinto deity of rice, agriculture, and overall prosperity. Foxes are considered Inari’s messengers and their statues can be found throughout the shrine grounds, which is a common feature in Inari shrines across Japan.

One of the most recognisable features of Sanko Inari Shrine is the path of red torii gates that line the way leading up to the main shrine building. The shrine is also famed for its heart-shaped ema (wooden plaques holding visitors wishes and prayers) displayed within the Himeki Shrine, a sub-shrine dedicated to love, marriage, and domestic harmony.
