World record attempt set for Doge Day 2024 in Japan

A celebration of the life of Kabosu, an internet famous Shiba Inu, is set to take place this November on the aptly named “Doge Day”.

Kabosu rose to fame as a global meme after her owner, posting under the moniker “Kabosu Mama”, shared her daily life to social media.

Kabosu went on to grace advertisements worldwide and amongst her many other exploits, even became the face of a virtual currency known as “Dogecoin”.

Such was Kabosu’s fame that she was even given her own statue in 2023, located in her hometown of Sakura in Chiba Prefecture, Japan.

Kabosu’s birthday on the 2nd of November was also designated as “Doge Day”, a day which fans across the globe and at home in Japan could come together to celebrate all things Kabosu.

Kabosu celebrated her 18th birthday in 2023, however she unfortunately passed away due to ill health in May 2024.

Doge Day 2024 has a special poignancy being the first time the event has been held since Kabosu’s passing and the organisers behind the event have been working hard to ensure that this years event is particularly memorable.

Taking place at Sakura Furusato Park in Sakura City, Doge Day 2024 will include a Guinness World Record attempt.

Organisers are inviting dogs and their owners to participate in an attempt to break the Guinness World Record for “most dogs brushing their teeth at the same time”.

According to Guinness World Records, the current record for this feat is 268, set in Hong Kong in 2012.

The aim is for Doge Day 2024 to see 320 dogs having their teeth brushed at the same time by their owners, with the brushing needing to be performed constantly for 3 minutes for it to be officially counted.

Owners who plan to participate must register their four legged friend in advance via a form or by telephone.

The record attempt will take place at 13:30 JST on the 2nd of November, though it may take some time for the result to be verified and confirmed by the adjudicators at Guinness World Records and it may not be possible to confirm on the same day whether the record has been broken.

Whether the record is broken or not, its safe to say that Doge Day 2024 will be a fun event for dogs and their owners, as there will also be food trucks and even Kabosu-chan merchandise on sale at the event.

Participants in the record attempt will also receive a particularly brilliant participation badge featuring none other than Kabosu herself.
